UNITED States-based Zimbabwean-American professional tennis coach, educator, and community leader Julius Mashonganyika is preparing to launch a Rural Tennis Development Pilot Programme in Murewa, Mutoko, and Wedza districts.
The initiative aims to introduce and expand tennis opportunities for schoolchildren in underserved rural communities, creating pathways for participation, education, and personal development through sport.
The programme will focus on:
l Introducing tennis to primary and secondary schools
l Training teachers and community volunteers to deliver basic tennis instruction
l Providing beginner equipment and modified learning programmes.
l Organising school festivals, clinics, and friendly competitions
l Promoting inclusion by ensuring access for boys, girls, and children with disabilities
l Encouraging healthy lifestyles, leadership, discipline, and educational achievement through sport
Inspired by the global “Tennis for All” philosophy and successful grassroots development programmes implemented throughout Africa, the initiative seeks to make tennis accessible to every child, regardless of background or location.
Grassroots and school-based tennis programmes have proven effective in growing participation and creating future players, coaches, officials, and community leaders.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub from his base in Virginia, United States, yesterday, Mashonganyika said: “As a product of Zimbabwe’s tennis development system, I believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of tennis.
“This pilot programme is about creating opportunities, building character, promoting education, and inspiring the next generation of leaders through sport.”
Mashonganyika said he will soon fly to Zimbabwe to launch this pilot programme.
The long-term vision is to establish sustainable school tennis hubs throughout rural Zimbabwe and collaborate with schools, communities, local authorities, tennis stakeholders, and development partners to grow the game across the country.
