MUTARE came alive this afternoon as thousands of residents thronged the Central Business District (CBD) to witness a colourful carnival held that set the tone for the Sanganai World Tourism Expo.
The carnival, which featured vibrant street parades, traditional dancers, and music performances, created a festive atmosphere for the city dwellers.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbra Rwodzi, who was guest of honour, said the carnival symbolised the spirit of unity and celebration that tourism brings.
“This carnival is not just entertainment, it is a statement that Mutare and Manicaland are ready to welcome the world. Tourism is about people, culture, and experiences, and today the people of Mutare have showcased that spirit beautifully. Under the visionary leadership of President ED Mnangagwa, we are building the tourism sector brick by brick, stone upon stone, and the Eastern Highlands will stand tall as a jewel for Zimbabwe,” she said.
Residents hailed the carnival as one of the most memorable events in recent years, with many saying it marked a new chapter for Manicaland’s cultural and tourism landscape.
In an interview, Dangamvura resident Mrs Gladys Mutero said she and her family enjoyed being part of the Sanganai/Hlanganayi Tourism Expo carnival.
“It has been years since Mutare had such a lively event. We feel proud to be part of this moment,” she said.
Another resident, Mr Walter Nyika said, “The carnival brought joy and unity. It truly felt like a celebration of our city.”
Local bands and traditional groups will perform at the carnival stage until 2200 hours tonight.
