STAND-up comedians will bring a roar of laughter to Bulawayo this week as the city plays host to two shows dubbed the Night of a Thousand Laughs on Friday and Saturday at Bulawayo Theatre. The event will also feature a number of budding comedians who will get an opportunity to prove their mettle on stage.Clive Chigubu, Babongile Sikhonjwa and Ntando “Van” Moyo will team up with the Bulawayo Cultural Festival to present some of the funniest and hilarious nights for local comedy lovers. One of the young comedians, Keith Nkosi, is expected to make a presentation angled towards the funny side of a presumably good lifestyle which many who have crossed borders search for.
In an interview, comedian Chigubu said he was ready to make the city laugh with a carefully planned act.
“I am happy such an event is going to take place in our own backyard. We have always wanted to host such big festivals where comedians can showcase their talent. This will be one show which many will remember in years to come,” he said.
Chigubu said Bulawayo was blessed with talented comedians, but lack of opportunities was hindering their progress.
“We have some of the best comics in town and this will be their opportunity to shine. If you ask me, they all have been preparing for this festival and fans should come in their numbers to support such an initiative,” he said.
One of the comedy pioneers in Bulawayo, Babongile Sikhonjwa, said he was pleased to be sharing the stage with young stars whom he had nurtured.
“This is a dream line up with both old and young comedians. Fans should come if they want to experience a good laugh. There might be a live performing band just to spice things up, but it will be fun and laughter throughout the festival,” he said.
Sikhonjwa warned parents not to bring children under the age of 18.
“We do not want to be limited in our performances, so strictly adults please. We really want to say all there is to say on the night without restricting ourselves,” he said.
