President Mnangagwa’s decision to fund a life-saving kidney transplant for United Bulawayo Hospitals midwife Princess Zinge is one such act that deserves recognition and praise.
According to reports, the 28-year-old nurse has been battling lupus, an autoimmune disease that severely damaged her kidneys and left her dependent on expensive dialysis treatment while awaiting a transplant. Her family had been struggling to raise about US$20 000 to secure the procedure in India.
Following an appeal by Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, the President approved full funding for the treatment, including travel and accommodation costs for the donor and caregiver.
This intervention goes beyond financial assistance. It is a reminder that behind every healthcare worker is a human being who also needs care, support and compassion.
Nurses dedicate their lives to looking after others, often under difficult circumstances and with limited resources. They stand beside patients during their most vulnerable moments, offering comfort, treatment and hope. When one of their own faces a life-threatening condition, it is fitting that society should rally behind them.
Princess Zinge’s story is one that resonates with many Zimbabweans. It reflects the challenges faced by families confronted with serious medical conditions whose treatment costs are often beyond their means.
For such families, hope can sometimes appear distant. Yet in this case, hope has been restored through decisive intervention.
The President’s gesture is also significant because it demonstrates the importance of responsive leadership.
