The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has set up a five-member board commission of inquiry to investigate circumstances surrounding food riots which occurred at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison recently.
The food riots left five inmates dead and destroyed property worth thousands of dollars. The five-member commission is headed by ZPCS Commissioner Wonder Chisora of the audit and inspectorate unit.
In an interview, ZPCS spokesperson Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Banda-Karinda said the board was given a month to investigate the disturbances.
“We have decided to come up with a five-member board of inquiry to look into this matter. We want the board to investigate what exactly transpired,” she said.
“The board is expected to compile a report by April 30.
“I believe that the riot staged by the inmates a fortnight ago was not only about food. I think there is more to it because we have had severe food shortages, especially in 2008 and 2009, but nothing of this nature happened.”
Chief Supt Banda-Karinda said Government has since released funds for the upkeep of 19 000 prisoners in the country’s 46 prisons.
