Zimbabwe has established the National Animal Research Ethics Committee to ensure that animal-based studies adhere to strict ethical standards.
This initiative safeguards animal welfare while enhancing the integrity and global recognition of Zimbabwe’s scientific research efforts.
On Wednesday, Dr Pious Makaya, chief director of the Directorate of Veterinary Services, launched a national awareness campaign at Midlands State University to foster a collaborative relationship aimed at promoting responsible science and superior research output.
“NAREC’s central mandate is to safeguard animal welfare throughout the research process, scrutinising proposals to guarantee humane treatment while fostering credible, high-quality scientific output,” he stated.
“As such, no animal-related investigation may begin without the committee’s approval, a requirement designed to protect animals and strengthen the integrity and global acceptance of Zimbabwe’s research findings.”
Dr Makaya emphasised that ethical research is not only about compassion but also forms the foundation of reliable, internationally respected results.
“The ongoing awareness campaigns and institutional discussions are designed to build lasting partnerships. This dialogue encourages universities and laboratories to view ethical oversight not as a hurdle but as a catalyst for innovation and global recognition.”
He further noted, “The welfare of animals used in research is paramount, and it is essential that researchers prioritise their well-being.
“Adhering to international standards and guidelines is crucial to ensuring the ethics of animal research. Researchers have a responsibility to treat animals with respect and care while minimising any potential harm. The use of animals in research must be justified, and researchers must demonstrate that they have considered alternative methods.
“Animal welfare is a key consideration in research, and researchers must prioritise the well-being of animals at all times.”
