Common exam mistakes and how to avoid them

Gabriel Manyeruke

Whenever examinations are administered, every candidate enters the room with one clear ambition: to pass.

Yet when results are released, some learners are left bewildered, wondering why they scored poorly on concepts they thought were straightforward.

Others quickly blame the examiner, assuming scripts were marked too harshly.

The truth, however, is that no competent teacher sets out to make learners fail.

More often than not, avoidable mistakes made during the exam lead to disappointing grades.

Skipping the cover page

One of the most common errors is failing to read instructions carefully, especially those on the cover page.

Many learners rush straight into answering questions without noticing crucial guidance — such as how many questions to attempt or which sections offer choice.

Spending just one or two minutes reading instructions can prevent costly blunders across the entire paper.

Time lost on one question

Another pitfall is spending too long on a single difficult question.

This drains precious minutes and leaves other questions unanswered. A wiser strategy is to tackle easier questions first then return to the challenging ones with a clearer mind.

Unanswered questions,

lost marks

Fear or poor time management often leads candidates to leave questions blank.

Yet even partial attempts can earn marks that make a difference. It is always better to attempt than to surrender.

The clock as an enemy

Ignoring time management is a silent killer of grades.

Learners must pace themselves, allocating time according to the marks each question carries. A simple watch on the desk can be the difference between finishing strong and leaving work incomplete.

Presentation matters

Illegible handwriting and careless presentation frustrate examiners.

Neat writing, clear paragraphs and spacing between answers not only make scripts easier to read but also reflect discipline and seriousness.

The forgotten review

Too many candidates submit scripts without checking for errors.

Reserving five to 10 minutes at the end to review answers can enable you to correct mistakes and polish responses.

Answering the wrong question

Misinterpreting questions is another trap.

Learners often write what they think is being asked rather than what is actually required. Underlining command words, identifying key terms and planning briefly before writing helps avoid this.

Cramming versus understanding

Memorisation without comprehension collapses when questions are twisted. Genuine understanding of concepts ensures flexibility in tackling varied question styles.

Preparedness counts

Exams demand readiness beyond knowledge.

Forgetting essentials such as rulers, calculators, protractors or identity cards can cause unnecessary stress. Packing materials the night before an exam is a simple safeguard.

Calm under pressure

Finally, panic is the enemy of performance.

Breathing deeply, starting with easier questions and building confidence step by step can steady nerves.

Exams are not traps set by teachers but opportunities for schoolchildren to demonstrate learning.

Success lies not only in knowledge but also in discipline, preparation and composure.

By avoiding these common mistakes, learners can transform anxiety into achievement and walk out of the exam room with confidence rather than   regret.
