Community service shapes young minds

THE link between education and community service is paramount in grooming well-rounded and socially responsible learners.

Education is not just about acquiring academic qualifications; it also entails a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct towards society.

Learners must be empowered to become agents of change in their communities by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to address social problems and advocate sustainable communities.

Community service is a way schoolchildren can apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

By volunteering their time and abilities to help others, learners are not only giving back to their communities but are also gaining valuable experience and building important life skills.

School clubs that volunteer in community service can help learners acquire life skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

Engaging in community service through school clubs has several benefits for learners.

It allows them to develop a sense of social responsibility and empathy towards others.

By actively participating in such projects, learners have the opportunity to make a positive impact on their communities and contribute to the welfare of others who might be marginalised.

There are various clubs at schools that can enable participants to engage in community service through volunteering and fundraising.

For example, an environmental club can organise tree planting events, clean-ups and recycling drives.

By participating in such activities, learners can raise awareness on environmental issues and contribute to the preservation of their natural surroundings.

Through compelling videos and articles, a media club can educate the public on a myriad of topical issues such as mental health, as well as drug and substance abuse.

By shining a light on certain issues in society, the media club can help inspire change and encourage members of the community to take positive action.

Learners can also volunteer in community service by seeking out opportunities on their own.

Most community organisations need volunteers to help with a variety of schemes.

Community service is required at shelters for the homeless, prisons, centres for the disabled and orphanages. It is also needed in organising important events for different awareness programmes in society.

Learners can inform the responsible authorities and reach out to these organisations directly to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Through these experiences, learners can gain a sense of social responsibility and a greater appreciation for the diversity and complexity of the world around them.

They can also explore their interests and passions through community service, as well as making informed decisions about their future career paths and academic pursuits.

Leadership skills, communication abilities and learning how to work effectively as part of a team are some of the critical skills that learners can hone through engaging in community service, and that can benefit them in future endeavours.

These soft skills are highly sought after by employers and can help learners stand out in a competitive job market.

Learners should be encouraged to become engaged members of their communities and develop a lifelong commitment of giving back to others.

Academic excellence and social responsibility are the determinants of successful communities.
