The Montecana Rally boat race roars into life at Lake Chivero this weekend with stiff competition expected.
The prestigious event, which headlines the sailing calendar, is a distance race sailed around the main islands in the lake starting at Jacana Yacht Club.
Junior sailors, in their Optimist Dinghies, will sail a shorter course around Floating Rock.
Peter Morris, chairperson of the Sailing Association of Zimbabwe, said they were expecting a big turn-up in comparison to last year’s edition that was affected by bad weather.
“This Sunday, 10am, will see the start of the Montecana Rally, an annual sailing event at Lake Chivero,” said Morris.
“With an ideal wind forecast of east, north-east at eight to 10 knots, there should be a bigger turnout than last year when wiser sailors believed the forecast and decided not to enter.
“The five boats that disregarded the forecast had to abandon the event when the wind died at Remembrance Island. The Montecana used to start simultaneously at the various sailing clubs around the lake, boats doing the circuit from their own clubs. “
