Composers, musicians get chance to win big

In a statement, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) communications and marketing manager Stephene Chikozho said this was a chance of a lifetime.

He said the competition was open to everyone and the deadline was 31 August.

“Composers and musical artistes from Zimbabwe and other countries across the world stand a chance to win a prize of £5 000 and a commemorative award by participating in an African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States anthem competition which will be running until the 31 August 2012,” said Chikozho.

He said the Ambassadorial Working Group was inviting composers and musical artistes from ACP countries to submit entries for an ACP anthem that would embody the spirit, ideals and objectives of the ACP Group of States.

Chikozho said the songs should be in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.

“The lyrics of the anthem should be in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and the anthem will serve as a symbol of a common identity for ACP members and the Group’s joint goal of eradicating poverty and bringing about a more equitable world order, not only for the ACP but for all peoples across the world,” said Chikozho.

He said the lyrics and melody should be conceived to express the unity and solidarity of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

“They should be guided by the following; ideals of solidarity that unite the ACP family of nations, richness and cultural diversity of ACP peoples, the quest for international understanding and commitment to the dialogue of civilisations, respect for values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, commitment to just and equitable development, international social justice and peace,” said Chikozho.

He said all entries must include written lyrics and submitted in mp3 or wav format, playable on a standard CD player.

“Entries may be sent electronically or by mail to the attention of: Josephine Latu-Sanft (Press Office), Avenue Georges Henri 451, 1200 Brussels, Belgium. Or by email [email protected]” said Chikozho.

The African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) is an organisation created by the Georgetown Agreement in 1975. It is composed of 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific states, with all of them, save for Cuba, signatories to the Cotonou Agreement, also known as the “ACP-EC Partnership Agreement” which binds them to the European Union. There are 48 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa, 16 from the Caribbean and 15 from the Pacific.

Zimbabwe is one of the member countries.
