CONCERNS about a possible mental health crisis, have been raised, following an increase in suicide cases in the past two months.
In an interview with H-Metro, clinical psychologist, Dr Debra Machando, said most suicide cases were largely related to drug and substance abuse.
“There has been an increase in the number of suicide cases related to drug and substance abuse due to the rise in emotional distress from multiple stresses,” she said.
Dr Machando said stress was triggered by financial struggles, unemployment, illness and death, which lead to a sense of hopelessness.
“The relationship between drug and substance abuse can be two-way, as some become suicidal due to the destructive effects on mental health caused by drugs and substance abuse.
“Others abuse drugs to numb emotional distress, including suicidal thoughts,” she said.
There are several sources of help for distressed or suicidal individuals.
She said people can visit health facilities and online services set up by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
“They can also visit institutions like the Crisis Support Centre at Parirenyatwa (Group of Hospitals) and the friendship bench.”
She said the World Health Organisation (WHO) is working with partners to support the Ministry of Health and Child Care to strengthen access to quality and affordable mental health services.
“Mental health services offered include building capacity of healthcare workers and the community to detect and manage mental health conditions.”
