CONSTRUCTION of the Mabvuku and Msasa Interchanges in Harare is progressing well as the Government moves to repair major roads in and around the city that are in poor condition, so they are trafficable.
Government officials and engineers have recently been touring some of the city roads to assess their condition.
Some of them include the newly rehabilitated Mama Mafuyana Drive – formerly Lorraine Drive, which is set to be opened to traffic on March 9, 2026, marking another milestone in Harare’s ongoing road modernisation programme.
The near-completion of works on the key thoroughfare comes as authorities intensify assessments of other roads across the capital requiring urgent rehabilitation.
Another road, the stretch of Harare Drive between Willowvale Road and Simon Mazorodze Road, has already been opened to traffic.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the progress made so far on the Mabvuku and Msasa Interchanges.
“Sub-structure works are now actively underway at the Mabvuku Interchange Construction Project, marking significant progress in the delivery of this transformative transport infrastructure.
“This foundational stage is critical in supporting the interchange’s superstructure and ensuring long-term durability, safety, and efficiency for road users. The project continues to move steadily forward as we commit to modernising and expanding our national road network,” the ministry said.
Construction of a detour is also currently in progress at the Msasa Interchange construction project.
“This critical phase will facilitate the smooth diversion of traffic while paving the way for accelerated works on the main interchange infrastructure. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we modernise and transform our road network.”
Recently, preparatory works for the construction of two additional interchanges at the junctions of Simon Mazorodze and Willowvale roads, and Simon Mazorodze Road and Remembrance Drive started, as four more such structures are in the pipeline to ease congestion, reduce carnage and modernise the country’s infrastructure.
The interchanges will be at the Mabvuku junction, Harare Drive-Mutare Road; Harare Drive-Liberation Legacy Way; Nemakonde Way-Harare Drive; Sam Nujoma-Harare Drive; Westgate Traffic Circle; Kuwadzana Traffic Circle and Churchill/Liberation Legacy Way.
This is also part of wider efforts to improve the country’s infrastructure, President Mnangagwa recently said.
