COOK FOR YOUR WIVES, GWEN TRUST TELLS MEN

MEN should share household work with women as part of the fight against gender-based violence, the Girls and Women Empowerment Network (GWEN) Trust has proposed.

This emerged at a two-day workshop which was hosted by the organisation in Chitungwiza which attracted, at least, 50 couples. The dialogue was centred on creating a safe platform to discuss and deliberate on unpaid domestic care work.

“We want to provide solutions to recognise, reduce and redistribute the burden of unpaid care and domestic work on girls and women.

“Through the dialogue, the couples managed to challenge gender stereotypes and they have pledged to create an environment where both men and women can thrive,” said GWEN programmes officer, Vivian Nheya.

Nheya said sharing household work was part of the solutions to tame the gender-based violence monster.

“We managed to convince the couples to share household work and ensure that all domestic duties are shared equally among boys and girls.

“Men must take a lead in reducing the burden on women and girls such that there is a safe space where couples don’t fight or complain of being burdened,” said Nheya.

Traditionally, women have done the bulk of the domestic chores in this country.
