AN unlicensed off-duty policeman was on Tuesday arrested for injuring two pedestrians while driving a commuter omnibus at the corner of Jason Moyo Avenue and Simon Muzenda Street.
Constable Kudakwashe Godzi (43) stationed at Ruwa Police Station, was off-duty and in police uniform when he reversed a Nissan Caravan and hit and injured two pedestrians.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest, saying the injured were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where they are reported to be in a stable condition.
“Police are investigating a road traffic accident where two pedestrians were injured.
“The driver is a member of The Zimbabwe Republic Police and is not licensed to drive.
“Investigations with a view to establishing the owner of the vehicle have since started,” he said.
“The police officer was reported to have been reversing his vehicle at a 360-degree angle and hit two pedestrians who were standing on the pavement along Simon Muzenda Street.
“One victim sustained a fractured left leg and the other sustained a cut on the forehead and were referred to hospital. The officer is in police holding cells and the vehicle was impounded and taken to the Vehicle Inspection Department in Eastlea,” he said.
One of the victims, Pauline Madumbu (33) of Juru in Goromonzi, is a vendor and mother of four children.
“I was admitted to hospital and I am in pain as I sustained a fracture on my leg and some bruises on my head. I was standing on the pavement when the mishap took place,” she said, while writhing in pain in her hospital bed.
