A POLICEMAN, Tatenda Walter Nyamutova, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting a suspect with an iron bar and truncheon, which caused serious injuries.
Nyamutova was found guilty by Harare magistrate Nyaradzo Manokore after a full trial.
He was initially sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment and six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that Nyamutova arrested Tendai Everton Rusere and an accomplice on allegations of unlawful entry on July 13, 2021.
He assaulted them with the iron bar and truncheon when they arrived at the police station. Rusere’s accomplice is believed to have died as a result of the assault, and an inquest into his death will be heard in court.
Nyamutova denied ever assaulting Rusere, but was convicted based on overwhelming evidence produced by the State.
