A police officer based at Mabelreign Police Station allegedly connived with his girlfriend who was employed as a maid to steal $2 000 from her boss, the court heard on Tuesday.

Svetoto Pfurutsa (34) and Miriam Chasi (22) denied the allegations when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Sharon Rakafa charged with theft.

They were both remanded to October 19 on $100 bail each.

Prosecutor Mr Progress Maringamoyo alleged that on September 14 Pfurutsa helped Chasi to secure a job at Grace Marufu’s house as her maid.

It is alleged that Pfurutsa, who is Marufu’s workmate, introduced Chasi as his niece.

The court heard that on October 3, Marufu left for her rural home.

She left Chasi at home with two minor children.

It is alleged that Chasi went through Marufu’s bedroom and took $2 000.

It is the State’s case that Chasi was seen by Marufu’s eight-year-old child holding the money. The following day Marufu returned from her rural home and Chasi asked for time off.

In Chasi’s absence Marufu realised that her money was missing.

The court heard that Marufu phoned Chasi and asked her to return home.

She interrogated the maid on the whereabouts of her money.

Chasi claimed she gave the money to her boyfriend Pfurutsa.

Pfurutsa denied the allegations.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the pair’s arrest.
