Cop nabbed for $30 bribe

A 25-year-old policeman appeared in court yesterday for allegedly accepting a $30 bribe to release an impounded motor vehicle from Avondale Police Station.

Alexio Nyamutora, who is stationed at Avondale Police Station, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with criminal abuse of office. Mr Mahwe remanded him out of custody on his on congnisance to May 22. Nyamutora was ordered to reside at the address he gave to the court and not to interfere with witnesses in the matter.

Prosecutor Ms Idah Maromo, alleged that on April 21 this year at ZRP Avondale offices, Nyamutora was carrying out an operation of targeting and impounding unregistered motor vehicles.

The court heard that Nyamutora impounded an unregistered Subaru Impreza belonging to Amos Muleya.

It is the State’s case that he booked the motor vehicle in the records and released the car to Muleya. It is alleged that Nyamutora accepted $30 from Muleya to illegally release the vehicle. Nyamutora was supposed to have issued a receipt for the release of the car but did not do so.
