A POLICE officer was last week dragged to court facing attempted murder charges after opening fire on his girlfriend following a misunderstanding over infidelity.

Freeman Sithole (38), who is based at Buchwa in Mberengwa, was dragged before Chipinge magistrate Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi, who remanded him in custody to today (January 10).

The rogue cop was advised to apply for bail at the High Court given the gravity of the offence.

Prosecuting, Mr Edmore Manhlanganise told the court that on December 27, 2021, Sithole went to his girlfriend Shingirirai Magazi’s homestead armed with a star pistol loaded with eight rounds.

“He confronted his girlfriend, accusing her of cheating on him with one Sam Marwa. A misunderstanding ensued between the two and Sithole drew out the pistol and threatened to shoot Magazi,” said Mr Manhlanganise.

The accused then fired three shots, hitting his estranged girlfriend on the chest, left elbow and left thigh.

A police report was made to the local police, leading to the arrest of Sithole.
