YOUNG Mthungameli Sibanda (17) who was one of the star players for Gloag High School in the 2015 edition of the Copa Coca-Cola Matabeleland North Under-16 provincial finals held in Hwange, is a starlet on a mission.
Gloag High together with other academic institutions that include Marist Brothers in Dete,A� Inyathi, David Livingstone, Gebhuza, Mosi Oa Tunya and Hwange have long dominated the provincea��s schools football competitions.
Against a background that his parents, Bekithemba Sibanda and Sindiso Ndlovu,A�A� gave him the green light to pursue football as a fulltime career, the young midfielder is eyeing a move to one of the countrya��s biggest clubs. His first choice is the Highlandersa�� Under 18 developmental side.
a�?I was recently in South Africa where I enjoyed watching some Absa Premiership matches. I have always loved playing football and Ia��m glad I scooped a number of individual prizes during my days at Gloag High. My parents have been very supportive and as such I have decided to take football as a fulltime career,a�? said Mthungameli who comes from a family of two boys and five girls.
Mthungamelia��s father is adamant that his son will do well in football.
a�?I have seen him play and hea��s gifted. He shined for Gloag on so many occasions. He has the passion for the game and as his parents we are also confident that he can do well as a fulltime football player. He has all our blessings,a�? said Sibanda.
Bossoa��s feeder side head coach Melusi a�?Mabalekaa�? Sibanda said the door was always open for players who are itching to play for the club.
a�?Capable players who think they have what it takes to play for our feeder sidesA� are always free to come and be assessed. We have an open door policy,a�? said Sibanda.
After shining at the 2016 Nash Arenel soccer tournament where Gloag High School was representing Matabeleland North in Chipinge, the young footie star was consequently named Gloag High School Best Under-17 football player, a development that saw him get a certificate plus a medal.
The Nash Arenel and Copa Coca-Cola Under national soccer tournaments have always presented a chance for pupils to showcase their talent where scouts and coaches often hunt for talent.
Players like Peter Ndlovu who played for Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo, came through the Copa Coca-Cola structures.
Ndlovu played in England for the greater part of his football career, becoming an icon of Zimbabwean football.
Alois Bunjira, Cephas Chimedza, Simba Nhivi, Artwell Mukandi, Ovidy Karuru, Johannes Ngodzo, Khama Billiat and Norman Maroto are some of the players to emerge from the Copa Coca-Cola tournaments.
