COPA provincial finals on cards

Boys and girls schools converge on 13 July at different schools across the country as they battle for the sole ticket and the right to represent their provinces in Victoria Falls.

Defending champions Manunure High from Kwekwe and the hosts for the national finals, MosiaTunya High in Victoria Falls, are guaranteed places at the national finals in the boys’ category.

MosiaTunya High and Vainona High are guaranteed places in the girls’ competition at the national finals in Victoria Falls.

In Harare, both boys and girls teams will gather at Prince Edward School as the fight for the ticket intensifies with traditional schools optimistic of victory.

Four-time winners of the tournament in the boys’ category, Churchill Boys High, Lord Malvern, who won the cup twice, Dzivarasekwa High 2, Mt Pleasant and Prince Edward, are favourites to clinch the sole ticket.

The Harare provincial girls competition at Prince Edward the same day, sees Vainona High, Mufakose 2 High, Glen View High 2, Mabvuku and Girls High battling to represent Harare province.

Partson Mugwanda, the Harare Head-In-Charge of Soccer, is oozing with confidence that Harare province will return from Victoria Falls with two trophies for boys and girls.

The last time Harare Province climbed to the winners podium to lift the floating trophy was in 2009 at Chinhoyi High when Dzivarasekwa High 2 swept everything on offer, including the individual awards.

Mugwanda said the Harare schools were unstoppable given the tough competition that has been seen from zonal level to the district competitions.

The headmaster of Churchill Boys High believes the defending champions in the boys’ section, Manunure High, are under pressure to deliver and would face stiff competition from Harare teams.

“I challenge the Harare province girls’ school winner in the provincial finals to emulate Vainona High during the national finals and hoist the glittering trophy,” Mugwanda said.

During the national finals on the weekend of July 27 to 29 at MosiaTunya, Vainona High will              battle with Manicaland and Mashonaland East provincial winners in Group C.

The Harare provincial winners at the national finals will fight for honours with Bulawayo and Mashonaland West provincial winners in Group D.

In the boys’ category at the national finals, the Harare provincial winners will battle with Matabeleland North and Mashonaland East provincial winners in Group A.

Meanwhile, Gifford High School will host the Bulawayo boys and girls’ provincial finals, with Matabeleland South provincials taking place at Manama High in Gwanda for both boys and girls.

In Matabeleland North province, MosiaTunya High hosts the boys’ and girls’ provincial finals while Mandava High in Zvishavane hosts the Midlands provincial finals for boys and girls.

St Antony Secondary in Zaka is the venue for boys’ and girls’ Masvingo provincial finals, with Mashonaland East schools converging at Marondera High.

Dorowa Mine Grounds in Buhera hosts the Manicaland provincial finals for boys and girls, while Mashonaland Central provincial finals are set for Hermann Gmeiner in Bindura for boys and girls.

Mashonaland West provincial finals will be held at St Eric Secondary in Norton for the boys while the girls will be at Vimbayi Secondary.
