POLICE were called to maintain order at Founders High School in Bulawayo on Thursday following wild celebrations by pupils after sitting their final examinations. Scores of Form 4 pupils at the school in Barham Green were joined by those from Hamilton High School, which is just 2km away, with some screaming and singing while those who had “grudges” started fighting.A school official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident.
No arrests were made.
“We”ve always had problems with pupils at the end of their final exams as they tend to be violent even towards each other. When we began the public examinations, we asked police to man the school and maintain order.
“Today police had to assist in separating a few pupils, including some from Hamilton who were fighting,” he said.
The pupils had just sat their Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Mathematics Paper 2 which they were made to re-write after a leak in the Midlands compromised the credibility of the earlier sitting.
Most schools are expected to close today, after the calendar was brought forward by a week due to the Zone 6 Youth Games being hosted in Bulawayo, which will see teachers being drafted in to help in the running of the regional competitions.
