THE curtain will come down in the ZRP Bulawayo Inter-Stations Football League when the final and third place play-off of the Townshend and Butcher tournament takes place at Ross Camp this afternoon.
Peter Leondios, the sponsor of the event, yesterday said he was surprised that it is the 29th time he is sponsoring the event. He promised more years of support for the tournament which he said was part of his company’s promotion of healthy lifestyles for Bulawayo police.
“We live with these people and they are doing a fantastic job guarding our businesses and ensuring there is law and order in the city.
“In our own small way, we have spent over US$1 700 in the tournament hoping this will lift their morale. They are a key component of society, soccer keeps them together, their morale high and fitness levels translating to a good mental state,” said Leondios whose sports goods shop has supported Bulawayo football as a sponsor since 1957.
ZRP Nkulumane and CID will clash in the final.
The third place play-off will feature Bulawayo Central and Cowdry Park.
CID were in great form last week in the semi-finals beating Bulawayo Central 4-1 in an exciting game played at Ross Camp.
CID were thrust into the lead by midfield maestro Favourite Nyoni through a header off a set piece by skipper Khumbulani Baloyi.
Bulawayo Central equalised through Leeroy Ndlovu on the stroke of half time.
Partson Muchingami made it 2-1 for CID, benefitting from a Delight Chingoma sitter.
Chingoma added to Bulawayo Central’s misery with CID’s third goal in the 71st minute.
Stewart Gomo scored the fourth to seal the five-goal thriller.
The other semi-final pitting Cowdry Park and Nkulumane was a 1-1 stalemate which led to the lottery that the former won 4-1 to set a final date with the detectives.
Leondios said semi-finalists will receive uniforms and winners will walk away with a shield, cash prize money and winners’ medals.
