Cops dismiss alleged human rights abuse

This comes after a local non-governmental organisation was recently quoted alleging that Zanu-PF supporters and State security agents contributed to 55 percent of the major human rights violations in the past six months.

HZT alleged that between January and June this year, Zanu-PF supporters contributed to 29 percent of the human rights violation cases in the country.
It also alleged that at least 13 percent of the violations were attributed to police and intelligence personnel with 10 percent each to war veterans and soldiers.

In a press statement, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba challenged the civic organisations to come forward with their substantiated cases of human rights abuses perpetrated by the force to enable them to take action.

“The ZRP would like to dismiss this reckless and vexatious analysis with the contempt it deserves. The said analysis neither pointed out the kind of human rights violations by the Zimbabwe Republic Police nor the methodology used to come up with the 13 percent figure,” she said.

She said the NGO should have at least sought an input from the police during the said analysis.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the force was professional in all its operations and that was the reason why their officers were called upon to undertake peacekeeping duties under the United Nations.

“Most of our police officers seconded to the United Nations peacekeeping duties came back with accolades of excellent policing.
“It is thus important to note that these dubious researches or analysis are meant to portray that the environment prevailing in the country is not free and fair for conducting credible elections,” she said.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the environment was peaceful contrary to allegations that cases of politically motivated violence were on the increase.
