“I never resided with the applicant, but I provided for the preparation for birth of the child. The child has two fathers as a certain man also bought clothes for the same child. I doubt if the child is mine,” said Vambe.
He even told the court that Sibanda was also in the habit of sending her friends to inform him that the child was not his.
Vambe challenged her to proffer proof to substantiate if he fathered the child.
Sibanda hit back claiming that Vambe impregnated her and now was denying responsibility since he had a new girlfriend.
“The child is his and it is not true that I have another man catering for the child’s needs. Respondent impregnated me but the problem now is he has a girlfriend who is forcing him to deny paternity,” said Sibanda.
Irked by Sibanda’s remarks, Vambe asked presiding magistrate Ms Nomsa Sabarauta to allow him to consult a traditional healer about the paternity.
“Your Worship, if I can have time to take her with our relatives to a traditional healer so that we can find out who is the owner of the child. I cannot afford to pay the money required at the hospital for the tests,” he said.
Ms Sabarauta asked him to go through the medical process and ordered him to pay the maintenance.
Meanwhile, Vambe told the court that he earns US$217 per month and had not been paid for the past seven months.
He offered to give US$20 for maintenance, but Sibanda declined the offer leading Ms Sibanda to order Vambe to pay US$50 while waiting for the paternity results.
