Detectives from the Border Control and Minerals Unit arrested them after a tip off. The unit’s spokesperson, Detective Assistant Inspector Zeldah Chidede, confirmed the arrests yesterday.
She said they received information that the five who were in possession of 16 elephant tusks were heading to the Boys’ Scout near the intersection of Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Enterprise Road.
The detectives then waylaid the five suspects who were travelling in a red Toyota Surf.
“The detectives pounced on them and searched the vehicle and the occupants. They recovered 16 elephant tusks packed in a grain bag and placed at the back compartment on the vehicle,” Det Asst Insp Chidede said.
The five implicated one identified as Mrs Marima. The 107kg elephant tusks worth US$26 750 were taken to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority for further investigations.
