Police said they have noted with concern that the arrest of suspected armed robber, Spencer Mapfumo, has led to a disturbing case of mistaken identity, with an innocent person bearing the same name now facing attacks on social media.
Mapfumo (42) is one of the eight suspected armed robbers who were recently arrested for targeting residents, churches and business premises and was involved in the US$30 000 robbery case that occurred at a company in Workington, Harare.
The suspects are facing 12 robbery charges.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the Spencer Mapfumo who is being attacked on social media is not among the suspected robbers arrested.
Police have since released the pictures of the suspect and that of Spencer Mapfumo who is being attacked on social media.
“Reference is made to the ZRP’s press statements released on November 4 and 15, 2024, on the arrest of Spencer Mapfumo and others in connection with cases of robbery in and around Harare,” he said.
“The police have noted that the arrest of Spencer Mapfumo has led to a disturbing case of mistaken identity, with an innocent person bearing the same name facing attacks on social media.
“We want to set the record straight and clarify that Spencer Mapfumo who was arrested for robbery is not the same individual who is being unfairly targeted online.
“To avoid further confusion and harm we urge social media users to verify information before sharing. Attached are photos of the suspect, Spencer Mapfumo, and the individual who is being harassed on social media.”
