A female student at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) died on Sunday morning after being hit by a car while on her way to the school campus from a popular local joint.

Tanatswa Chinyama from the School of Hospitality and Tourism was in the company of five other students when the accident occurred at 4.25 am.

Four others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Chinhoyi Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle lost control and hit the students from behind near the railway crossing along the Chinhoyi-Chegutu Highway. He or she then fled from the scene.

In a statement, Chinhoyi University of Technology’s Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Preston Paradzayi said the six had gone to Jongwe Corner for a Zim Hip-Hop Culture event.

“I deeply regret to announce the passing of Tanatswa Chinyama (2.1 Tourism and Hospitality) who lost her life at the scene,” reads the statement.

The SRC has since declared today a Black Monday in honour of the deceased.
