Cornway Amusement Park in Mt. Hampden is expected to attract at least 10 teams from around Harare who will grace its sandy man-made beaches at the inaugural Cornway Invitational Beach Soccer Championships on July 27.

The popular leisure center has long been known for its sandy beach. The Beach Soccer tournament is jointly organized by Cornway Amusement Park, Beach Soccer Zimbabwe (BSZ), and Harare Province Beach Soccer Association.

Hosts Cornway, Marlborough Legends, and SSS Fencing are among the teams that have confirmed their participation in the sport’s first-ever competition in the country. Tournament spokesperson and BSZ Board Member, Mike Gijima, said Cornway Amusement Park was the perfect venue for an inaugural event that aspires to produce competitive beach soccer players.

“I believe the Cornway Invitational can and will produce players for our future national team,” he said. “Holding this tournament is part of our long-term vision to develop the sport in our country. It is very encouraging to see our nearby settlements showing interest in beach soccer as our association moves to turn our national players into role models.”

Gijima added that he was pleased to see that Cornway Amusement Park has taken the initiative in hosting such an event. “I am very happy to announce this special event where our young people will enjoy this new sporting code,” he said.

“However, I am happier that Cornway Amusement Park took the initiative to help grow and develop beach soccer by affording our association an opportunity to hold this tournament at their facility, which is top-notch and is sure to provide both key elements that make beach soccer what it is – sport and entertainment.
