In Harare 22 MDC-T councillors either lost the primaries to new entrants or did not contest because they were fired by Government and their party on allegations of corruption.
An interesting case in Harare was that of Clr Friday Muleya – an outspoken individual during council meetings but with little to show on the ground.
He was beaten by former councillor Grandmore Hakata, famed for taking shower baths at Town House during the Mudzuri/Makwavarara era.
In Masvingo seven of the 10 sitting councillors also lost the party primaries.
Masvingo Mayor Femias Chakabuda did not contest in the primaries as he anticipates contesting for mayorship while in Chinhoyi seven MDC-T councillors out of a total of 13 also lost their party primaries further confirming the people’s disgruntlement with poor service delivery.
All the 25 MDC-T councillors were fired from the party on allegations of corruption and those who managed to successfully lodge their nomination papers are doing so as independents.
MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai has also complained of the high levels of corruption among his councillors.
Traditionally councillorship was held by mature people who own property and go into council to protect certain interests.
