CHEGUTU Pirates’ chances of playing in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One League this season hang in the balance after the Chegutu Municipality turned down the team’s request to fund its affiliation fee of $6000.
Zaire were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the year after spending just one season in the top-flight league.
They were not an embarrassment in the league but without a home ground, where they enjoy one of the most passionate support bases in the country, Pirates were doomed.
Recently, they announced the appointment of Moses Chunga as their head coach.
The Chegutu Municipality has been one of the key sponsors of the club.
The Pirates leadership wrote to the local authority seeking assistance for the payment of affiliation fees in order for them to be registered to play in Division One this season. However, the Chegutu Municipality shot down their request.
In a letter dated February 28, 2025, and addressed to the Pirates leadership, the Council’s Community Service Officer, Munyaradzi Sanangurai, said their financial resources were depressed.
“Due to limited resources, we regret to inform you that the Council cannot afford the $6000 affiliation fee at this time,” wrote Sanangurai.
“Council resolved that the team will be fully run by the community.
“Therefore, we suggest that you explore alternative funding sources such as local sponsorship or partnerships to support your team’s participation in the league.”
