THE Chinhoyi City Council has embarked on a water meter disconnection blitz which is targeted at defaulting residents.
The Council says many residents have been defaulting when it comes to paying their water and the list was growing.
The blitz appears to have caught some residents by surprise.
One resident told H-Metro:
“I was shocked when I came home back from work to find out that Council employees had taken off my water meter,” said the resident.
“I might be in arrears but their decision to remove the meter was a harsh one. At least, they could have invited me to their offices to chart a way forward.”
Another resident, Plaxedes Mereki, said the Council should have first warned the residents rather than just striking without notice.
“Our Council could have warned us first than rush to remove water meters.
“We are not refusing to pay our dues to the Council but life is difficult as we are facing financial difficulties,” said Mereki.
Acting Town Clerk, Engineer Simon Marara, told H-Metro, that the local authority has gone on a water meter disconnection blitz targeting defaulting customers.
“We have embarked on a blitz targeting all those who have not been paying their water bills to Council and those who have been doing illegal water connections, “ said Marara.
“Some of these residents had their water disconnected but just after our employees leave their premises, they do illegal connections.
“So, we are now disconnecting them by removing the meters,” said Marara.
He urged the residents to settle their dues.
