The Messenger of Court yesterday disrupted business at Town House after attaching tables and chairs following Harare City Council’s failure to settle a $3 000 debt.
The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) said a meeting on wetlands which was scheduled to take place at Town House was called off after the deputy sheriff stormed the “council chamber and ordered his accompanying team to take all the furniture in the room.”
“The Mayor of Harare, Councillor Bernard Manyenyeni and the Acting Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango tried to negotiate with the Messenger of Court, but the agreement was short lived because the Messenger of Court instructed his lieutenants to take out the furniture quickly,” said CHRA.
“This was after the acting town clerk Mr Chisango had told the messenger of court that the payment of the debt would be done in an hour by the city treasury. The meeting was called off as chairs and desks where the participants were sitting on were taken.”
Clr Manyenyeni confirmed the development yesterday saying it was regrettable.
“It is regrettable,” he said.
“It should have been handled better.”
