“The total cost of the Musami Dam project is estimated at US$885,64 million and this cannot be financed by the City of Harare outrightly,” he said.
Harare is facing acute water shortages with authorities failing to get more sources.
The city can only provide less than half of the projected demand that stands at 1 200 megalitres a day.
Kunzvi Dam was supposed to be commissioned in 2002 when demand was forecast at 650 megalitres a day.
“This would have increased production capacity to 876 megalitres, which capacity would have been sufficient to meet demand until 2008, at which point the Musami Dam should have been commissioned to bring total production capacity to 1 300 megalitres per day.”

Sourcing the city’s water upstream has attendant advantages as fewer purification chemicals will be used.
At the moment, Harare uses US$2 million to buy a cocktail of treatment chemi- cals.
The city’s raw water is polluted by sewer and industrial effluent.
The city has embarked on several rehabilitation projects of existing infrastructure such as replacement of worn out water pipes and upgrading the water and sewer treatment plants, but the success of the programmes have been drowned by the huge demand.
