Masvingo City Council plans to buy two new refuse collection trucks this year in a development that will boost garbage collection in the country’s oldest town.
The council has only two refuse trucks and this has been hampering collection of garbage in the city.
The city’s chief health officer Mr Zvapano Munganasa said council had already budgeted funds for the two trucks. He said the city’s rapid expansion over the past few years meant two trucks can longer cope.
“We continue to urge our residents to pay their bills on time so that we will be able to buy the two refuse trucks as scheduled before the end of this year,” said Mr Munganasa.
“Under normal circumstances we are supposed to have eight refuse trucks, but of the five that we have only two are working after the other three broke down.
“Council has already placed a tender to purchase one refuse truck and we hope the situation will improve so that all the trucks are delivered as per schedule.”
Mr Munganasa said council has been supporting health clubs to ensure that they promote cleanliness in the city, adding that arrangements were underway to dedicate a refuse truck to the garbage their collect.
“We have been supporting health clubs, they collect garbage around the city, but we want also to appeal to our residents not to dispose of rubbish everywhere, including open spaces as that creates risk of outbreak of diseases such as typhoid,” he said.
Masvingo is undergoing rapid expansion with the opening of new suburbs at Victoria Ranch.
