Harare City Council is auditing all its solar lighting deals to determine those which are working and benefiting council and residents.
This comes after the council received complaints from residents that most of the solar lights are not working, yet the companies responsible are getting revenue from advertisements placed on the street light poles.
In an interview with The Herald, Mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba said there was no need to continue pursuing a project that was not yielding results.
“I have received numerous complaints from the residents of Harare in relation to the solar lights deals, which council entered into,” he said
“They are saying about 60 percent of the solar lights are not working properly, but the companies that put them up are collecting revenue from advertisements, so we are going to revisit the deal and see whether there is need for us to continue pursuing a project that is not giving value to our city.
“The intention is to look at the infrastructure that these people put up to determine whether it is durable and why it is not responding to the needs of the residents for lighting.
“We are going to look at that with a view to canceling some of the deals.”
