Council urges residents to prevent sewer blockages

Harare City Council has advised residents against using sand to clean pots and refrain from dumping items into the sewer system to prevent blockages.

The announcement was made after a series of repairs were carried out on burst sewer pipes in the Daniel Street area in Mbare.

Council said in the majority of cases where sewer bursts occur, they find a range of unwanted items, including sand, clothes, cutlery, household materials, animal remains and cowhides that would have been disposed of by residents.

It has appealed to residents to cooperate with them to ensure that the sewer system remains functional and efficient.

“The City would like to reiterate that sewer pipes do not just block unless something which is not supposed to be in the pipes is dumped by residents.  “We must work together to ensure that sewer pipes remain clear from unwanted items,” said the council in a statement.
