HARARE City Council has said it will not rehire any of its retrenched staff and that the four directors who were recently retrenched will not be re-called as their positions have been removed from the council establishment.
The city said 792 employees were no longer on its payroll as they had reached their normal retirement ages and due for pension.
“Two directors who had reached the age of retirement have been offered one-year contracts each because their skills were still needed while they groomed successors during the contract period,” said the city’s human capital director Dr Cainos Chingombe in a statement.
“Council does not intend to re-engage additional employees. Council has already put in place a comprehensive succession framework to deal with similar cases in future.”
Dr Chingombe said by the end this year, the city hoped to have at least 1 300 employees leaving employment because they would have reached their retirement ages.
He said their posts would be filled through re-deployment of staff with the requisite skills.
The city has since applied for a US$15 million loan from CABS after realising that the Local Authorities Pension Fund was failing to honour the pension payout of the former employees because it was in arrears regarding its statutory obligations to the fund.
“The loan facility will ensure retirees are paid on time and do not fall into destitution,” said Dr Chingombe.
