saying there was a need to check whether the move was in line with Government policy.
This comes at a time when the town is dogged by accommodation shortages with at least 10 000 people on the housing waiting list.
According to the latest council report, Gwanda Town Council workers had applied for a piece of land for construction of their houses.
During a full council meeting recently, the councillors objected to the adoption of the proposal and said more consultation was needed before approving it.
“Members commented that there was a need to ascertain whether there was a standing policy on the allocation of stands to council employees. They commented that there should be a proper policy on the allocation of stands to council employees,” reads the report.
“They said that it was not proper for employees to just identify stands, which were not known by the Estates Office.”
The report further notes that the resolution that the application for stands by council employees should await the approval of the draft site plan from the Department of Physical Planning was deleted following objections by the councillors.
“It was resolved that the issue of the allocation of stands to council employees should be referred to the staffing and general purposes committee for appropriate consideration,” reads the report.
