Councillor accused of fanning divisions in Sanyati

Sanyati Rural District Council Ward 18 Councillor Kudzanai Murungweni has been accused of inciting divisions within the local authority and attempting to assume managerial roles.

Clr Murungweni, who was elected on a CCC ticket, recently claimed that the council adopted a disputed 2025 budget without properly consulting  stakeholders, including residents and local businesses.

However, several residents and business owners have refuted these claims, stating that they participated in budget consultations where their views were considered.

Mr Mirirai Mapfumo, a businessman, expressed optimism that his contributions would be acknowledged.

“We had our budget consultations where the business people and residents shared their views. The approach was in line with President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind,” he said.

Mrs Sibongile Bhebhe echoed similar sentiments, noting that residents felt included in the budget formulation process.

Consultations also took place in Marimari, where community members provided input.

Council chairperson Clr Stanford Chaombezvi dismissed Clr Murungweni’s accusations as unfounded, saying they were attempts by opposition officials to derail the process.

Budget consultations were conducted in all the wards for Sanyati RDC. Only a few individuals obstructed the process at Sanyati Growth Point, instigated by Clr Murungweni.

Clr Chaombezvi further criticised the opposition councillor for hindering council development projects and attempting to take over managerial functions, which has led to conflicts with council executives.

Clr Murungweni has also been accused of discouraging residents from paying their rates since August 2023.

Only one out of 18 wards has residents opposing the budget, and their rejection is politically motivated.

This situation has reportedly affected the council’s revenue inflows, hampering service delivery.

The council is working on issuing electronic monthly bills and has included a reduction in market stall fees in the new budget to attract occupants.

Despite all councillors being sent to the Chitepo School of Ideology for orientation, Clr Murungweni reportedly refused to attend, raising concerns about his commitment to unity in the council.

On his part, Clr Murungweni maintains that there was no review of the current year’s financials as stipulated by guidelines, continuing to assert his position against the council’s actions.
