Special interest councillor Gift Mabhaudhi (Jnr) said information should be moved electronically.
“Papers are taking up space at our houses. They are also attracting cockroaches,” he said.
Clr Mabhaudhi (Jnr) said the fuel, paper and ink used in a year would amount to the cost of laptops for each of the councillors. But another special interests Clr Hiernymo Torongo suggested that the demand for laptops was asking for an exit package. The council’s term ends in June.
“Are you not looking at this as an exit package?” he asked.
Clr Peter Moyo seconded the motion by Clr Mabhaudhi. Even Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda agreed to the motion saying, “That is an unassailbale position.”
Town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said the laptops would cost US$30 000.
Clr Herbert Gomba asked Mr Masunda to lobby Lafarge, one of the companies that the mayor chairs, to assist in capacitating the councillors.
The matter has been raised before with management promising to buy the laptops but the councillors’ term is almost coming to an end. But if the present council fails to access the laptops the next council would certainly do as there is now a standing resolution to that effect.
