FOUR people, including a couple who were on their way from Zambia to a funeral in Harare, died on the spot in a collision between a lorry and a Honda Fit here.
The lorry was traveling from Harare to Chinhoyi while the Honda Fit was on its way to the capital.
The accident occurred on Saturday night at about 9pm near the Provincial Heroes Acre on the outskirts of Chinhoyi.
Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo, visited the scene of the crash.
Officer in charge of traffic in Chinhoyi, Inspector Effort Chapoto, said those in the Honda Fit were on their way to a funeral.
“The driver and a couple who were on their way to a funeral in Harare,” he said.
“A pedestrian also died in the accident.
“The driver of the lorry also got injured but is in stable condition,” said Chapoto.
He said the other passenger, in the Honda Fit, sustained serious injuries and was admitted in the intensive care unit at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
Minister Chombo said:
“There have been a lot of accidents that have happened near this shrine, maiming a lot of people.
“It’s sad because these people were coming from Zambia, with a body, going to Harare for a funeral and, unfortunately, met this tragedy.
“I want to urge people not to travel at night and, if travelling, motorists must exercise caution.
“I want to urge the people of Zimbabwe, especially those from this province, to travel during the day.
“We must not drive while under the influence of alcohol and we should not over speed as we are losing a lot of lives.”
