Couple up for fraud

A LOCAL couple was hauled to court on fraud charges involving over US$150 000 after they allegedly created fake title deeds.

Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda, remanded the couple in custody.

They will be back in court today for a bail hearing. Allegations are that Stanley Kunaka, and his wife Caroline, acted as real estate agents and advertised a property they claimed was for sale.

The complainant responded by contacting the pair, and offered a swap and top-up deal of his house, plus US$20 000.

On August 26, the Kunakas convinced the complainant to meet them in Norton so they could go to Chegutu.

When they arrived in Chegutu, the couple produced fake documents, which were said to be original title deeds, and gave them to the complainant. The complainant paid US$15 000 to the couple, which they took and shared.

When the complainant returned to Harare, he went to the Deeds Office to check the authenticity of the document the couple had given him.

He was told the title deeds were fake.

The complainant reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the Kunakas.
