In her application, Sipanera indicated that she wanted US$150 for maintenance and the presiding magistrate, Ms Blessing Murwisi, ruled in her favour but cut the figure to US$80.

In his opposing papers, Chembe accused his wife of inflating the figures.
“Your Worship! My wife has inflated the figures so much but I am offering to pay US$20,” he said.
After being asked to make a breakdown of how the money could maintain the child, Chembe failed to do so, forcing magistrate Ms Mur­wisi to raise it to US$80.
He said: “I have been trying to ensure that my daughter is well catered for.
“It is just unfortunate that I do not                       com­mand a sound resource base, I am employed with the Zim All Stars, a musical outfit.
“At present we are not doing well, on account of the prevaling economic hardships. I am paid on commission and of late have been enduring serious financial throes, earn­ing an average of US$100 per month,” he said.
