A woman who is denying her cousin his inheritance was last week left with egg on the face after a community court reprimanded her.
Perpetua Makaza of Matongera Village under Chief Zimunya publicly declared that her cousin, Batsirai Makaza, has no right to inherit any property from their late grandparents’ estate.
Headman Chigodora presided over the matter and stated that Perpetua’s actions revealed the deep-rooted animosity within the Makaza family.
Perpetua was hauled before the community by her former friend, Rudo Chinyamunzore.
Chinyamunzore said she bought a piece of land from Batsirai, but Perpetua is denying her access to the land, arguing that Batsirai has no right to the land and therefore should not have sold it.
Chinyamunzore paid US$250 to Batsirai and will pay a balance of US$250.
She begged for the court’s intervention over the issue.
However, Perpetua stood her ground.
“Batsirai had no right to sell the land because it does not belong to him. He has no inheritance because his father sold his own piece of land before his death.
“The remaining land was to be shared between my father’s children and therefore Batsirai should not benefit from it. We cannot suffer because of my uncle’s sins. Batsirai cannot get anything,” she charged.
The woman said Batsirai grabbed the land which is under dispute, built a house on it and later sold it.
“He should not have built his house there. He did it just to spite me, but he never stayed there. He built the house and sold the land.
“He knew that he has no inheritance within this family. His father sold his inheritance and squandered all the money,” she said.
Perpetua also revealed that there is bad blood between herself and Chinyamunzore. She said she would not have objected to the land sale if someone else besides Chinyamunzore had bought it.
“Even if the land was to be sold, I would never allow the Chinyamunzore family to buy it, especially Rudo,” said Perpetua.
This, however, infuriated Chinyamunzore and she hit back.
“I know why she is acting like this. We used to be best friends, but it all ended when she stole my boyfriend. We have never seen eye-to-eye ever since that episode.
“She is power hungry and has declared herself the matriarch of the Makaza family. This is despite the fact that there are males who are older than her in the family. She also have elder sisters.
“She fought her elder sisters and has sent everyone packing from the family homestead.
“Batsirai also left because of Perpetua’s harassment and everyone knows it.
“He ended up buying land in Mutasa where he is now based. She is very abusive. She is staying at the family homestead with her lover after kicking her brothers out,” said Chinyamunzore.
Headman Chigodora reprimanded Perpetua for kicking other family members out.
He, however, transferred the matter to Acting Chief Zimunya’s court after Perpetua insisted that Batsirai does not deserve to inherit anything.
“Since you have declared yourself the family head, even though you have male family members who are older than you, you should either pay back Chinyamunzore her money or we transfer the matter to Acting Chief Zimunya’s court. As the family head, you should take all the responsibilities and pay the money back,” ruled Headman Chigodora.
