Creative industry forms umbrella body

THE recently held Arts and Culture Indaba ended on a high note with stakeholders passing a resolution which led to the formation of the Chamber of Creative Industries interim apex council committee. The interim committee was formed so that it works on the modalities that need to be put in place for the formation of a substantive arts and culture umbrella body.

In an interview, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) communications officer, Catherine Mtombeni, said the resolution to form this arts and culture umbrella body was passed at a two-day annual Arts and Culture Indaba held in Harare last week.

“There was a general feeling at this and other previous Indabas that there was a need for such an organ which will advocate for the rights of the artists to be formed,” she said.

Mtombeni said it was noted that the formation of the apex council would help the fragmented artistes unite and form vibrant associations.
The apex interim committee is made up of chairman Albert Chimedza of the Mbira Centre, secretary Herman Chimusoro, committee members Daisy Jeremani, Josh Nyapimbi of Nhimbe Trust, film maker Chipo Nzonzo, author and historian Pathisa Nyathi, Cont Mhlanga of Amakhosi Theatre and music promoter Patson “Chipaz” Chimbodza.

The two-day indaba was held under the theme: “Turning Around the Arts and Culture for Sustainable Socio-Economic Empowerment.”
