FORMER Dynamos player and coach Tonderai Ndiraya says it will be a sad day for Zimbabwean football if the Glamour Boys get relegated this season.
DeMbare, who are the country’s most successful club with 21 league titles under their belt and a CAF Champions League final appearance, are going through one of their worst campaign in the club’s 62-year history.
The giants have been struggling from the start of the campaign, and the 0-1 defeat to Simba Bhora at the weekend pushed them deeper into relegation.
DeMbare are eight points from the position of safety going into the last 13 matches of the season, and the prospects of relegation are getting plausible with each passing game.
Ndiraya, who is now head coach at newboys Scottland, told journalists that the people at Dynamos should take re-sponsibility for the team’s poor fortunes and find a way to save it from sinking.
“It’s sad to see where Dynamos is at the moment and I hope that those that are running the club will do something for the team to survive,” Ndiraya told journalists.
Dynamos are now in the hands of one of the surviving founder members Bernard Marriot, who unfortunately has been accused of mismanagement.
DeMbare this season failed to assemble a strong team after losing part of their sponsorship from Sakunda Holdings, who nonetheless continue to pay staff salaries.
The Glamour Boys have managed only two wins in 20 outings and sit second from the bottom of the table, just above cash-strapped Kwekwe United.
Ndiraya said DeMbare has built a strong profile as an institution and their relegation could be catastrophic to the league.
“Like what you said, they probably need a miracle. I don’t know where that is going to come from but surely some-thing has to be done because, in quotes, ‘there is no football without Dynamos’,” said Ndiraya.
“Dynamos is a very important member of this league. I think they are one of the founding members of the PSL. So, it will be sad for a founding member to get relegated.
“It will be a very sad day for football, if you ask me. But they are in that situation not because of anyone. They put themselves in that situation and those that put the team in that situation have to find a way to take the club out of the situation,” he said.
