STRIKERS in the Zifa Central Soccer League seem to have been asleep this season as the top scorer, Collen Moyo of Ivan Hoe, only got 13 goals.
Erea Phiri of Shabanie Mine and Blanket Mine’s Ephraim Moyo were joint second with seven goals apiece.
Whawha striker Albert Matewu holds the region’s record after he netted 24 goals during the 2014 season as the prisons and correctional services side clinched the sole promotional ticket into the premiership.
However, Ivan Hoe coach Isaac Nyabvure was quick to spring to the defence of his striker saying this was one of the toughest seasons in the history of the league where the championship race went to the wire.
“Collen has got all the attributes of a good striker because he is good in the air, he does not lose the ball easily when in possession and has a strong physical presence.
“However, at times he tends to lose concentration which if he can work on that he can become better,” said Nyabvure of the 28 year old striker.
“This was a tough year for strikers because the competition was very high which was not easy for strikers and therefore it would be unfair to blame them. However, I must concur that the quality of strikers has gone down.”
Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni whose team ended the season on top of the log and whose striker Phiri was the second best, said for him the championship was a team effort, hence everyone contributed to its success — @lavuzigara1
