CUP FEVER GRIPS CITY: Bosso face DeMbare as MWOS chase glory

Fungai Muderere

THE 2025 Chibuku Super Cup has exploded into life with 19 goals scored in open play as the country’s biggest knockout tournament heads into the semi-final stage.

MWOS hitman Arthur Banda sits on top of the scorers’ chart with two goals while a staggering 17 players are tied on one each in a competition that has already produced drama, penalty heartbreaks and giant-killings.

This year’s semi-final line-up promises fireworks. Highlanders will lock horns with old rivals Dynamos in a potentially explosive Battle of Zimbabwe, while newboys MWOS face seasoned campaigners Triangle United at venues still to be announced.

The road to the last four has been brutal. Eight matches have been settled by penalties, with Dynamos relying on spot kicks to scrape past Yadah, Simba Bhora and ZPC Kariba. Kelvin Kaindu’s men, who are the defending champions, have yet to win a game in open play but are proving ruthless from 12 yards.

Only three sides left in the tournament know what it takes to lift the cup. Dynamos are back-to-back winners from 2023 and 2024, Highlanders last tasted glory in 2019 under their current coach Hendrikus Pieter De Jongh, while Triangle’s name is etched in history as the 2018 champions.

For those who have fallen, it has been a bitter goodbye. Big names like CAPS United, Chicken Inn, FC Platinum, Manica Diamonds and Ngezi Platinum have already bowed out, underlining the unpredictability of the Chibuku.
The glamour and prestige of the competition come with more than just bragging rights. The champions earn a golden ticket to the Caf Confederation Cup. Dynamos, however, know just how cruel that stage can be after crashing out earlier this year against Botswana’s Orapa United in a penalty shootout despite carrying a first-leg lead.

As the semi-finals loom, fans are bracing for more thrills. Will Bosso silence DeMbare, will Dynamos defend their crown, or will MWOS and Triangle rewrite the script?

The stage is set for a thrilling finale in a tournament where giants tremble and underdogs dream big.
