MANICALAND’s representatives at the ongoing Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) National Championships, Dangamvura Knights and Villa Stars, faced a tough challenge in the annual competition, being eliminated in the group stage.
However, Dangamvura Knights put up a commendable fight, losing some matches by narrow margins.
On Thursday, Dangamvura Knights defeated Mimosa Celtics 55-42, before being narrowly beaten by Varsity Leopards 59-50.
They then outplayed Vic Falls Panthers 61-35, only to be beaten by Mbare Bulls 46-33, thereby ending their participation in the competition.
In contrast, Villa Stars struggled, losing their opening match to Arcadia Bucs 69-76. They then suffered a heavy defeat to JBC, 32-63, and a further loss to Giants, 79-82.
Chairman-cum-coach of D-Knights, Tonderai Shasha, said: “We are proud of what D-Knights achieved at the BUZ Nationals. Competing against strong Harare teams pushed us to raise our game. Though we missed the semis, we gained valuable experience and are more determined than ever. Huge thanks to our amazing fans and sponsors—your support means everything. We will be back stronger.”
Tapiwa Justice Nyauchi, president of the Manicaland Basketball Association (MBA), added: “As hosts, Manicaland proudly fielded Dangamvura Knights and Villa Stars, who both showcased remarkable talent. Their competitive spirit brought excitement to the local crowds and posed a significant challenge to traditionally dominant teams from Harare, much to the delight of our passionate supporters. On behalf of the Manicaland Basketball Association, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our valued sponsors, notably DP Service Centre, who have been with us throughout the season.”
