IN a shocking incident, a 25-year-old self-proclaimed faith healer, Memory Jokonya was arrested for abducting a two-month-old baby from his mother, Vivian Nyeke (20).

The incident occurred on April 26, 2025.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Jokonya and Nyeke were acquaintances.

He said Jokonya had requested Nyeke to accompany her from Shamva to Marondera to collect her belongings. However, Jokonya’s intentions proved to be duplicitous.

“On their way to Marondera, the accused suggested they should go to Rusape to pick up a friend who would help with transportation. Upon reaching Rusape, around 8pm, they spent the night at Ever Green Market, and the next morning Jokonya excused herself, saying she was going to greet a friend across the street. She disappeared with the baby, leaving the complainant stranded,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

It is alleged that Nyeke attempted to contact Jokonya, but her phone was unreachable.

Nyeke subsequently reported the incident to Rusape ZRP police.

“A manhunt was launched and other ZRP bases were notified. On April 29, around 9am, ZRP Nyanga traffic received a tip-off about a family in Hauna Growth Point, Mutasa, who had been having trouble identifying the true identity of a baby. They quickly reacted and apprehended the suspect, who turned out to be Jokonya, as she attempted to board a bus.

The baby was safely recovered and taken to Hauna Hospital for safekeeping,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Jokonya is currently in custody, and the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.
